PRACTICE SCHEDULE for this weekend is attached.

THANKS to those of you who donated used laptops for the Ugandan children - your generosity is appreciated!

NAPLES BOAT PARADE will be held on SAT DEC 13th. Please come out and support the LA Pink Dragons, Electric Dragons and AeroDragons who will be participating this year!

SCDBC MEETING MINUTES were left off of the last e-mail. They are attached to this e-mail . . .

SAFE TRAVELS AND GOOD LUCK to the Long Beach paddlers leaving for Kenya next Tuesday for the 1st Annual Tudor Creek International Dragon Boat Regatta in Mombasa! Best wishes to Kathy Chin (KG), Joe Yang (KG), Anthony Luna (AeroDragons), Jerry Melton (AeroDragons), Mary Melton (AeroDragons), MaryAnne Mosher (Lokahi OC) and Mrs. Chen (SCDBC)! They will be joining 2 paddlers from Boston DB Club and 2 paddlers from SFO's Dragon Warriors and Diesel Fish. We will be keeping a blog of our adventures at http://kenyadragonboatdec08.blogspot.com/

11/24/08
Dr. Chen is still looking for used laptops to donate to the Kivabuka Primary School which is in one of the poorest regions in Africa, located in Jinja, Uganda. We currently have 3.

The paddlers that will be travelling to Kenya for the 1st Annual Tudor Creek Dragon Boat Regatta in Mombasa will be carrying stationery supplies, pencils, crayons, paper, etc. for these children. If you have an old laptop that you no longer need, PLEASE consider donating it to the Kivabuka School as a holiday gift.

If you do have an old laptop that you wish to donate, let us know by this week if possible --- you can drop it off at Dr. Chen's office in Monterey Park, or we can make arrangements to pick up from you. Please respond to this e-mail.

Thanks in advance for your help --- hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving this week!

LAST TEAMS OUT LAST SUNDAY (UCLA, UCI AND USC) - we received complaints AGAIN from both the Marine Department AND people using the beach last weekend. There were water bottles all over the place, some on the wooden fence, just a few feet from the trash cans. What does it take to get your paddlers to clean up the beach after themselves? PLEASE PICK UP YOUR WATER BOTTLES/TRASH AS YOU LEAVE YOUR BOATS - what you do (or don't do) reflects on our club as a whole. We will be scheduling a Captains' Meeting in the near future to discuss what kinds of penalties to assess teams that don't adhere to the SCDBC policies and procedures and do not help keep our beach area clean.

10/24/08
PRACTICE SCHEDULE for this weekend is attached. Last teams out (UCI, USC, UCLA), please make sure you hang up the life vests and paddles, put away the hose/cart and clean up the beach after you're done.

LONG BEACH DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Details for our dragon boat festival are steadily coming together. PADDLERS/LEADERSHIP - THIS YEAR THE CITY OF LONG BEACH WILL BE WATCHING US VERY CLOSELY! Fire marshals and LB police will be onsite. Please pay attention to these updates on logistics for next weekend!

ATTACHMENTS -
TENTATIVE Race Schedule - FINAL Race Schedule will be sent within the next few days.
TEAM TENT Map
VENDOR Map

PARKING
This year the city of Long Beach is requiring that we distribute parking passes based on specific parking locations. EACH team will be given a specific number of parking passes to distribute to each of its paddlers. Each permit is good for a designated parking area. Paddlers MUST park in the area to which they are assigned. The parking areas will be as follows: Marine Stadium North Lots (across the water and north of the sand area), Colorado Lagoon South, Colorado Lagoon North, Alamitos Basin (Boy Scout parking area) and possibly Will Rodgers Middle School. THINK CARPOOL GUYS!

LOADING AND UNLOADING OF EQUIPMENT
Teams have a window of from 6:30A to 7:00A in which they can unload items near their tent locations. Since Dr. Chen is providing the tents for us this year, loading and unloading should be minimal --- PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE AND KEEP THE NOISE DOWN WHEN UNLOADING AND PLEASE UNLOAD AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO MINIMIZE TRAFFIC DELAYS!!

BBQ'S/ALCOHOL
In the past, the city of Long Beach has been lax in enforcing the BBQ and alcohol restrictions on the beach. This year will be different. ICEA/Dr. Chen will be assessed a fine of $1,000 for each incident/violation cited. So, please, no BBQ's or alcohol on the beach (small sterno cans for warming food are OK).

TRASH/RECYCLABLES
The city of Long Beach is also mandating that we recycle. There will be 40 spots where recycling bins will be set up. Trash will be picked up throughout the day; recyclables will be picked up in the evenings.

BOAT LOADING
This year, we are asking each team's paddlers to be responsible for pushing their boats out from the beach. This means rows 1 and 2 and drummer will be the last to load and will help push the boats offshore.

We would like each year-around team to bring a bailer (detergent bottle with the top cut off) with them to get rid of excess water on the boat after racing.

Teams need to pay attention to water bottles and sandals that they leave on the beach in the loading area. Every year we have water bottles and flip flops/sandals that seem to have lost their owners. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR PADDLERS PICK UP AFTER YOURSELVES after your races!

GENDER TEAMS FOR THE U.S. NATIONALS (FROM LEON CHANG/LARD)
To the Long Beach Dragonboat Community,

The local Long Beach race is on the near horizon.  Even rarer, this year, Long Beach has the great honor of hosting the 2008 U.S. Nationals.  To put this into perspective, the Nationals competition is held every other year, and the chosen race sites alternate between the western, central, and eastern regions.  The opportunity to participate in Nationals in Long Beach is unique and most likely will not return "home" for at least another decade!

In speaking with Dr. Chen, whose contributions to our community cannot be overstated, he finds great pride in the successes of the community at-large, not just in any single team, but in all of us.  As such, we have decided to commit our resources, for planning, evaluating, and coaching to put together a composite Long Beach "All-Star" team to enter into BOTH a MEN'S and WOMEN'S National Squad.

This endeavor is certainly not without its challenges.  An earlier effort yielded untenable results.  And what we are looking for from this request is even more paddlers, enough to qualify two boats to represent at the national caliber.  Thus, I am writing to all of you to solicit your participation.  As a member of this community, I recognize the competitive strength of the teams and its individual paddlers; Long Beach has grown, become stronger, and has established itself in competition.  But not like this.  A strong Long Beach-represented team truly cannot exist, without all your participation.

DETAILS

1.SCHEDULE – final schedule forthcoming.  Anticipated schedule to include 1 day for tryouts followed by one required practice per week.  (TENTATIVE DATES: 5/24, 5/31; 6/7, 6/14, 6/28; 7/5, 7/12, 7/19 - TIMES TBD)  Also, if interested, there's a purely optional Wednesday session (6:00-7:30pm) available.  We can coordinate following tryouts.

2.TRYOUTS – based on erg testing.  A 2-min. time trial on your preferred side on an erg concept2 with a paddling adapter.  We specifically chose this method of testing because it is easy to use and does not require familiarity to produce strong results.  Paddlers with the top 20 net score (gross score adjusted for weight) per gender automatically qualify for the respective teams.  Additional spots will be reserved for each team to meet the maximum allowed roster per boat.

3.PRACTICE – required for the top 25 (including alternates).  Practices to be held one day per week for a maximum one-hour session.  Schedule TBD.  Practice duration and frequency may be subject to change as the schedule advances and progress is assessed.  Following time trials, paddlers that qualify are expected to make a minimum of 6 of 8 practices.  Failure to do so will open your seat to the next alternate.

4.We understand and respect each paddler's responsibility and commitment to your own teams and do not expect your involvement with this gender squad to interfere with this.  However discretion should be exercised should any conflicts arise when the National schedule is announced.

5.If interested, please respond to coaches@laracingdragons.org.  We need your response, ASAP, in order to effectively organize the time trials.

We anticipate this venture and opportunity to be a real exciting one for the entire community and look forward to joining with all of you to represent Long Beach!  Please pass this on to all your teammates and other fellow paddlers you think might be interested in this event.

Cheers,

Leon Cheng on behalf of Southern California Dragon Boat Club and the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Racing Dragons, a 501c3 non-profit foundation:

MESSAGE FROM LEON CHENG

With the whirlwind events of the last several weeks and tragic outcomes, I finally have some time to express to all of you the sincere gratitude we feel for each of you.  Unfortunately, there is not the amount or appropriate enough words in the English vocabulary to communicate the magnitude of your support and what it means to all of us.  Put in the simplest of terms, on behalf of the Cheng and Yeh families, thanks.

Thanks for cheerleading my dad towards recovery, for taking care of his and Arthur’s family when they were/are absent, for the beautiful flowers that graced their services and our homes, for the cards of support, for the prayers and well-wishes, your generosity, for the “Red Cross” care in providing food and everything else, the donations that will go a long way towards many unexpected expenses, the volunteers, the organization of help and events, LARD gathering, Arthur’s party, help at the services, your attendance and participation at the services, your laughter and tears, for having a place in each of your hearts for these two and being a part of their lives, and your love and ever-present support still.  For all these things, things we are aware of and not, thanks.  In a time when it’s easy to fall into such huge holes of sadness left by their departures, with your support, you have all filled these holes to allow us to stand on firm ground.

In founding LARD a decade ago, as a grassroots team and with all my siblings and relatives involved, it was important to establish a casual but intimate relationship within the team, a family feel.  After all, why not get to really know and care about the people you surround yourself with on a regular basis?  This idea of family was something that I like to believe came from how my dad raised us.  And I don’t think anyone could have realized the importance of this family as it is today.  Additionally, prior to these events, I had always known the dragonboat community to be warm.  But in the ways you have extended yourselves, the description of family is not just appropriate to LARD but to all of you.

Beyond recreation, beyond practice, and beyond the sport, you have all helped us, together.  My dad would have been proud.  He would have been proud to see how much people cared about him and his family, to see that the seats were filled at his service, to see, by an extension of himself, the friends we have and people we know.  Arthur likewise was a proud member of LARD.  While happy to see all the people at his party and services (how you represented!), you could probably and predictably hear his sheepish chuckle, embarrassed about all the fuss over him.

We love my dad and Arthur.  And while the loss is and will always be deeply painful, it is not entirely insurmountable.  With all of you.

Thanks.

Lawrence, Margret, Leon, Jason, and Karen Cheng
Chien Yeh, Su Yuan Hong, Arthur, Alex, and Megan Yeh

12/03/07
Dr. Chen would like to pass on some information concerning our fellow dragon boaters LARD -

Leon, Jason and Karen Cheng of LARD (Los Angeles Racing Dragons) lost their father this last week. Also, another family member and LARD team member, Arthur Yeh, was involved in a fatal car accident as he was driving home from the hospital. Arthur is also the brother of Megan Yeh who is a captain of the UCI dragon boat team. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers . . .

There will be a memorial service for Lawrence Cheng as follows:

DATE: This SAT 12/8
TIME:  3PM
LOCATION:  Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Whittier
Detailed information can be found at :
http://www.rosehills.com

The service will be held at the Hillside Chapel.
The family welcomes anyone who wishes to attend.

11/20/07
NAPLES BOAT PARADE is December 15th this year. Skippers' meeting for the Naples Boat Parade will be WED December 12th at the Long Beach Yacht Club at 7PM. Boat assignments will be as follows:

    Boat #7 Ylw/Org - LA Pink Dragons
    Boat #8 Grn/Gld - Team DPW

TRAINING STEERS - Some confusion exists regarding training of new steerspersons.  When training a new steersperson prior to him/her becoming certified, a certified steersperson must be in the back of the boat ready to take the helm if an emergency arises.  This means they must NOT be paddling but supervising the student.

TENTS/SPACE

Tent assignments are also posted to the SCDBC website

Each team has to provide its own tents and each crew is allocated a space of approximately 10' x 20' for its tent. There should be a 6' fire lane in between each of your tents.

SET UP TIME FROM 7:00AM-7:30AM BOTH DAYS

For teams that have to unload equipment, tents, and large tables, please arrive at the race site BEFORE 7:30am. You may enter through GATE A and drop off the items. Please be aware of the adjacent residences and try to keep noise down to a minimum. You may drop off items on Friday AT YOUR OWN RISK. We will have some security, but we are not responsible for items that you leave overnight.

PARKING FOR FESTIVAL ~ NO VIP PARKING THIS YEAR
This year we will NOT be giving out VIP parking passes to the teams. The VIP lot will be reserved for festival staff and volunteers only. Everyone else must enter through GATE C, at the north end of the stadium.

Again REMIND your paddlers and guests that parking will not be allowed on Appian Way, nor on the side streets adjacent to Marine Stadium. Free parking is available in the lots at the north end of Marine Stadium. There is also free parking at the Boy Scout lots farther away south of 2nd Street bridge near Mother's Beach.

Remember to have your waiver forms and team rosters ready for submission SAT AM.

7/11/07 v
PARKING FOR FESTIVAL
Please make sure your paddlers and guests are aware that parking will not be allowed on Appian Way, nor on the side streets adjacent to Marine Stadium. Free parking is available in the lots at the north end of Marine Stadium. There is also free parking at the Boy Scout lots farther away south of 2nd Street bridge near Mother's Beach.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS
A reminder to team captains:  people other than dragon boaters use the park and benches.  Last SUN around noon one of the teams moved the radio and other objects on the bench closest to the restroom so they could put there items down.  The radio and other personal effects belong to a volleyball player who plays there every weekend.  Since they paid to have those benches put in we should respect their use of them.

Also, the wooden braces from the boats need to be placed parallel to the length of the sand volleyball court and as far away from the volleyball court as possible. We don't want any of the volleyball players tripping over the braces.

GOOD LUCK TO THE LOS ANGELES PINK DRAGONS
as they travel to Windsor, Ontario, Canada to compete French Dressing International Dragon Boat Race for the Cure this Saturday. Bring back GOLD, ladies!

PROTECT YOUR EYES! - Remind your paddlers to wear sunglasses . . .
As you slather on sunscreen to protect your skin this summer, don't forget sunglasses to protect your eyes. The same harmful rays that damage skin can also increase your risk of developing eye problems, such as cataracts--a clouding of the eye's lens that develops over years. When sunlight reflects off of sand and water, it further increases exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Everyone is at risk for eye damage from the sun year-round. The risk is greatest from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (when most of us are out on the water).

UV radiation in sunlight is commonly divided into UVA and UVB, and your sunglasses should block both forms. Look for a label that specifically states that the glasses offer 99 percent to 100 percent UV protection. Sunglasses should be dark enough to reduce glare, but not dark enough to distort colors. For best color perception, Prevent Blindness America, a volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight, recommends lenses that are neutral gray, amber, brown or green. People who wear contact lenses that offer UV protection should still wear sunglasses.

3/8/07 v
SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT
SCDBC policy states that "life jackets are mandatory and must be worn during every practice." Paddlers who practice without life jackets are putting the SCDBC and its member teams at risk of losing its insurance coverage. Without insurance coverage, teams will be unable to use the boats.  EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY paddlers MUST WEAR LIFE VESTS whenever they are on the water. Starting this weekend, any team found not complying with this policy will LOSE 2 WEEKS PRACTICE TIME and/or be required to PURCHASE its own insurance before practicing on the water.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
Remember that clocks "spring forward" this SUN.

REDUCED PRACTICE HOURS
Just a reminder that as we get closer to the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival, those teams currently scheduled for two (2)- hour practices may be cut back to one (1)-hour practices to allow other teams to utilize the morning hour slots. During the off-season, member teams of the Southern California Dragon Boat Club are allowed extra hours/extra days of practice. We will be re-arranging the schedule around the beginning of MAY to start accommodating the Festival teams. Your cooperation will be appreciated!
